Alberta prohibits aftermarket film on the windshield and both front side windows at any darkness. Rear glass has no limit. We quote the legal half and explain exactly why.

Alberta has the strictest front-window rule in the country, and most of what you read online about "legal tint percentages" does not apply here. Section 70(1) of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation prohibits applying any transparent, translucent or opaque material to the windshield or to either front side window. Not 70%, not 50% — any aftermarket film on those three pieces of glass is prohibited, regardless of how light it is.
Rear side windows and the back glass have no darkness limit at all. You can go from a light 50% down to 5% limo, provided the vehicle has working mirrors on both sides. That is where all of the legal benefit lives, and that is all we quote.
That covers every vehicle that gets driven on a road in Alberta, and it is what the packages below are priced for.
Alberta’s Vehicle Equipment Regulation does not permit a vehicle to be operated on a public road with aftermarket film on the windshield or on either front side window. There is no darkness that makes it compliant. A light 70% film is treated the same as limo.
We will install front film on vehicles that are not driven on Alberta roads — show cars, track and off-road builds, trailer queens, and vehicles being exported. Before we do, you sign a written acknowledgement that the vehicle will not be driven on a public road in Alberta with that film fitted.
If you drive it anyway, the consequences are yours: roughly $155 per window, and both fronts is around $310 before you pay to have the film professionally removed. A vehicle coming into Alberta from another province or the US will also fail its Out-of-Province Inspection until the front film is off.
If your vehicle is a daily driver, we will decline the job and explain why. We would rather lose the sale than hand you a ticket and a removal bill.
There is one legitimate route to front film on a road vehicle. Alberta issues a medical exemption permit to drivers with a condition requiring protection from sunlight — recurrent skin cancer and similar diagnoses. It needs a letter from your physician and the permit has to be produced on request. If you hold one, bring it and we will install to exactly what it allows.
The $99 specials use dyed film. In Calgary it fails faster than almost anywhere, because a chinook can swing thirty degrees in a day and that constant expansion and contraction destroys cheap adhesive. Dyed film turns purple, bubbles at the edges, and needs replacing within one to three years — at which point you pay for removal as well as a second install.
We also do not install mirrored or metallic film on any window. Alberta prohibits reflective film regardless of darkness, and metallic film interferes with phone signal and remote start.
